BPMN STANDARD.
What is the BPMN standard? What is it used for?
As the complexity of our world evolves, companies increasingly need to write down their processes in order to ensure the sustainability, reliability and robustness of their governance and internal operating methods. It is also important for companies to ensure that their processes are clearly understood by the people who will be using them, even if they come from different backgrounds or business cultures. For example, a process involving a company's sales department and IT department must be clearly understood by both departments, even if the vocabulary or business culture of the different organisational units involved in the process varies.
This is where Business Process Modelling (BPM) standards come in. These standards define common, standardised graphic conventions for representing process flow diagrams. The two best-known standards are described below.
The BPMN standard BPMN stands for BUSINESS PROCESS MODEL & NOTATION. This standard can be accessed by this link. This standard was developed by OMG (Object Management Group), an international non-profit consortium that develops international standards. This standards organisation is based in the United States (in Needham, Massachusetts) and develops standards and recommendations used throughout the world.
The BPMN standard is a specification established by the OMG. It is free of charge.
The ISO/IEC 19510 standard: This standard is very similar to the BPMN standard. It was drawn up by ISO, an international standards body based in Geneva, Switzerland. The table of contents of this standard can be accessed on the ISO site at the following link this link.
The technical specifications of these two standards are very similar overall.
